The brief for this project was to replace the inefficient and poor performing existing rear extension with a generous, open plan living space, featuring a new kitchen-diner and sunroom.
A massing strategy was developed which preserved the integrity of the original building and showcased its external craftsmanship, whilst providing much improved external access. The living spaces wrap around a new courtyard, creating a second external space that is separate from the large main garden, offering a more intimate and enclosed area. The addition of this South-facing courtyard ensures that both the existing and new internal spaces receive ample natural daylight and views to nature.
Lightweight materials are proposed to create a contrast with the existing property while remaining subordinate to it. The massing strategy and use of contemporary materials establishes a visual distinction between the new extension and the historic structure, with the timber also providing a softer and more natural aesthetic, suitable for its setting within the landscaped garden.
